Hooded Seal

7. HOODED SEAL

Hooded seals are found on islands located near the North Pole and Canada. Male hooded seals have both an inflatable skull hood and a nasal balloon. When aroused, angered or showing off for females, they inflate their sacs that can reach a foot or more in diameter. The nasal balloon can be inflated through one or both nostrils and is bright red in color, giving this creature a very weird but striking appearance. Hooded seals are very territorial and known to defend their homes more forcefully than other seal, sea-lion and walrus species.
