Also known as robber crabs, giant coconut crabs can weigh up to 5 lbs, and can live to be 120 years old. This makes them the largest land-dwelling invertebrates (animals that don't have backbones) on our planet. The crabs live on coral atolls in the tropical Indian and Pacific oceans.
Giant coconut crabs are renowned for their tree-climbing abilities and their taste for coconuts, which they are able to crack open with their powerful claws. They are opportunistic feeders, and will even prey on wildlife, including large seabirds. There have also been reports of attacks on family pets (such as small kittens). Tell us what you think of these incredibly odd creatures!
